Istanbul's days as a well-kept secret of globetrotters are long behind it, especially with the city being named a European Capital of Culture in 2010 and gaining even more widespread attention along with an increase in international visitors. However, that doesn't mean your visit to this fascinating Turkish city will be spoiled by too many tourists, as there are still plenty of places to escape the crowds in this ancient metropolis.

History lovers will be in their element in Istanbul, which was the cornerstone of some of the world's most remarkable empires across the centuries - from the Romans to the Byzantines and the Ottomans. The Bosphorus Strait divides the modern city even further, with the old city being located in Europe and the more modern districts forming the westernmost part of Asia, meaning visitors can enjoy a multitude of experiences when visiting Istanbul today.

Undoubtedly the biggest attraction in Istanbul is the famous Blue Mosque, officially known as Sultan Ahmet Cammi, which can be found in the historic Sultanahmet area of the city. Originally built by the conquering Ottomans centuries ago, the mosque is still a functioning place of worship today, meaning visitors should pay respect to the location by dressing and behaving appropriately.

The Byzantine period is also well represented in contemporary Istanbul, especially with the Hagia Sophia which features a fusion of Christian and Islamic decoration, representing its changing status as a church and mosque over the centuries. There are plenty of lesser-known gems to be found simply by wandering Istanbul's ancient streets too, ensuring you'll never run out of things to do on a break in the city.

Not all your time in Istanbul needs to be spent visiting ancient buildings of course, and you could also have a great time shopping in the city's lively bazaars. The Grand Bazaar is the most famous, where you can practice your haggling skills to get low prices on hand crafted ceramics, carpets and other mementos of your trip. Another great day trip out of your hotel Istanbul is taking a boat ride down the Bosphorus River, which offers the perfect vantage point for many of the city's sights - including forts, palaces and traditional Ottoman homes.

After a hectic day spent exploring bazaars and old buildings, you'll want to sit down to a satisfying meal, and fortunately Istanbul is bursting with great places to eat. Try mezes to get a full sense of Turkish cooking, or visit fish restaurants in Beyoglu if you have a taste for seafood.
