The ballad of Take That is a sloppy one. From joyful beginnings as a five piece boy band in 1990, when the band experienced massive success thanks to their catchy dance pop tunes until 1995, to when key member Robbie Williams' drug abuse got to the extent that he left the band. While Take That could have tried to continue without Williams, and they did indeed attempt to by playing a few shows at festivals and part of their unfinished tour, the band announced it would be ending work in 1996.
Take That was revered by many eighties-born children as their top band, and the split came as a disaster to many teenage fans - but Take That's legacy wore on, and when the odd events of the 2000s began taking place - that is, nineties bands getting back together - the members of Take That simply couldn't resist. Alongside other top pop bands from the previous decade such as the Spice Girls and Boyzone, Take That's four amicable members - that is, Gary Barlow, Mark Owen, Jason Orange and Howard Donald - all got together and decided to give it another crack. The result was incredible. As a foursome, the boys released a new album and enjoyed more popularity than ever. Not only were stadiums packed with the same teenage girls they'd always been used to, but fans in their twenties were flocking to see their childhood obsession even a decade later. It seems that nostalgia had won over many people, and if their first album hadn't been universally liked, it perhaps would've been left at that.
